Camiguin - Day Tour Part 1: Giant Clams, Church Ruins, Old Volcano Trail and Sunken Cemetery

After closing the deal with my habal-habal driver, I hopped into his motorcycle and we commenced the whole day tour of the island. He specifically discussed to me where we would go. Since I only have 1 day to spend, I just picked the places I want. I don't want to rush myself in covering all the sites just for the sake of going there and have a photo taken, I want to take it slow and enjoy each spot that we're going to visit.

Here's the first half:

GIANT CLAMS OCEAN NURSERY

A nursery for the farming of clams was established in the small barangay of Cantaan. At one end of the facility is a breeding center where there are glass aquariums with live clams of different types. There are also 3 concrete tanks that hold a giant clam and other clam species. I was impressed at how the little girls explained to me the different clams, they definitely know what they're talking about.

You can also swim to see the clams up close in the sea-nursery. It would be a great experience if you opt to try it.

Entrance fee is 25 PHP, clam viewing fee in the sea-nursery is 150 PHP. You can also rent snorkeling gears and floaters for 100 and 50 PHP respectively.

OLD CATARMAN CHURCH RUINS

Also known as Gui-ob Church, these are the remnants of the eruption and formation of Mt. Vulcan sometime in 1871 to 1875.

The church of the Old Catarman town was wiped out and partly submerged by volcanic materials and only the church ruins and bell tower were left from the old town.

VIA CROSSES, OLD VOLCANO TRAIL

The 14 Stations of the Cross with life-size statues depicting the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ lined up the trail to the Old Volcano's peak.

It's a favorite destination of devotees and pilgrims during Lenten Season to do the Via Crusis. Environmental fee of 5 pesos will be collected as you enter the trail.

SUNKEN CEMETERY

Some areas in the town of Bonbon diminished during the volcanic birth of Mt. Vulcan that led to the sinking of the town's cemetery to below sea level. In 1982, a huge white cross was erected to mark the cemetery that was swept by the said eruption.

There are boats that you can hire for 15 PHP to bring you to the cross. I suggest that you visit it late afternoon as it is a wonderful spot to watch the breathtaking sunset. It's also an ideal place for snorkeling and diving.
