Pampanga is considered as the "culinary capital of the Philippines", no doubt about it. And one of the most popular restaurants in Pampanga and a favorite among tourists and balikbayan is Binulo Restaurant. Located inside Clark Freeport Zone, they specialize in Capampangan cuisines and grilled US steaks. Their menu is composed of an array of authentic Kapampangan favorites that will surely stimulate your taste buds with rich and delectable flavors.
The name of the restaurant came from the traditional way of cooking food inside a bamboo stalk called "Binulo." This process of cooking food was taken from how the indigenous Aetas cook their food.
For dinner during the recently concluded Metro Angeles Food Tour 2014, we were able to sample on some great food that Binulo Restaurant offers.
Shrimp Okoy (PHP 175.00)
This okoy has crispy shrimps and papaya fritters. It is well seasoned, not too oily and very crispy. Dip it in vinegar, and it makes an awesome appetizer.Paco Salad (PHP 175.00)
Fresh fiddlehead fern salad with shrimps, duck eggs, tomatoes and nuts. This salad is so refreshing and bursting with a lot of texture.Pangat na Ulang (PHP 378.00)
This isn't your ordinary sinigang na hipon; rather, it is fresh water prawns or ulang in sour broth. The dish was served straight out of the bamboo stalk where it was cooked. It has the the right sour taste and the juicy prawn is tender and so flavorful.Crispy Binagoongan (PHP 310.00)
This is deep fried pork in shrimp paste. According to one of the staff, this is one of their best-sellers. It has the right combination of saltiness and sweetness. I love the crunchy texture of the deep fried pork.Binukadkad na Hito (PHP 295.00)
Filleted catfish, deep-fried to perfection. I love the crunchiness and the freshness of the catfish. The buro (fermented rice) and the veggies (eggplant, ampalaya and mustard leaves) on the side well complement it. The way to eat it is to get a piece of mustard (mustasa) leaf, add the buro and the fish, and you're set for a bursting of flavors in your mouth.Sisig (PHP 280.00)
You should never leave Pampanga without tasting a single sisig dish. Served on a sizzling plate, this classic Kapampangan dish is made of chopped pig's cheeks and ears, liver and onions. It is well-cooked and the seasoning is just right.Beef Kare Kare (PHP 485.00)
My friend knows that I love kare-kare. Binulo Restaurant's kare-kare is quite good. It is made from U.S. oxtail which gives it a succulent taste. It has rich, thick peanut sauce with just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The bagoong on the side perfectly compliments it.Binulong Nasi (PHP 150.00)
Fragrant rice wrapped in banana leaves and served in bamboo reed is Binulo Restaurant's trademark. It's a bit dry, sticky, yet very fragrant. It's like "suman" with the flavor of the banana leaves sticking to it.Suman with Mango Ice Cream (PHP 175.00)
To cap our dinner, we had Suman with Mango Ice Cream as dessert. The sticky rice were enriched with the sweetness of the fresh mangoes and topped mango ice cream. It's so delicious!!! What a great way to end our Binulo Restaurant dining experience!Overall, dining at Binulo Restaurant is a great way to sample on authentic Kapampangan dishes. The place is nice and has a very homey and relaxing ambiance. The staff are polite, pleasant and very friendly. For the quality of food and serving size, their prices are reasonable.
So, if you want to experience authentic Kapampangan cuisines, Binulo Restaurant is a must when visiting the province of Pampanga.
