I must admit, i am not a hard-core boxing fan. But when Pru Life UK invited me to watch the live screening of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in Bantayan island, Cebu; I quickly said yes. Who would not love to experience that?
Pru Life UK salutes every Filipino fighter by bringing the live coverage of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in 10 communities in the country. Pru Life UK worked with communities in Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Quezon, Albay, Aklan, Northern Samar as well as in Bantayan Island in Cebu. The match was aired in three municipalities on the island: Santa Fe, Madridejos, and Bantayan.
Bantayan island, located in the northern part of Cebu is one of the hardest hit by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013, claiming more than 6,000 lives. For an island that is still recovering from the wrath of the strongest typhoon ever recorded in the Philippines, watching Manny Pacquiao box in the ring is such a privilege especially for those who will be able to watch it for the very first time and for the people in areas where there are still no electricity.
After almost two years since the destruction, the island, together with the affected provinces in the Central Visayas region, continues recovery efforts with the support of charitable organizations and Pru Life UK’s Prudence Foundation. The Foundation has provided livelihood and rehabilitation to the people of Bantayan Island for the past year; aiding almost 90 percent of the population with their substantial needs.
"We know how hard it was for the Bantayan people to get back on their feet when they have lost almost everything." said Antonio de Rosas, president and CEO of Pru Life "Pru Life UK supports every Filipino fighter. With our charitable arm, Prudence Foundation, we are committed to restoring the island. This is why we brought the much-anticipated fight of the two boxing greats to the people of Bantayan Island, We strongly believe that this will further inspire the locals – and us -- to fight against difficulties and succeed in making life better."
As a salute to every Filipino fighter, Pru Life UK also provided everyone in the venue with the iconic red headbands that were shown in a commercial, shot on the island to show the unity of the Filipinos in preparation for the fight.
Upon arrival at the venue in the municipality of Sta. Fe, I was at awe with the outpouring support showed by the locals to the people's champ. Men, women and even kids were there to watch Manny Pacquiao fight against Floyd Mayweather. Everyone is on high spirit and very excited every time Manny Pacquiao was showed on the big screen, even before the fight started.
When the fight started, everyone was glued on the screen to watch the much awaited "fight of the century."
Round by round, everyone was thrilled as Manny showed an impressive performance. People would cheer, shout and stand on their feet every time Manny lands a punch. It was indeed a festive atmosphere inside the venue. Seeing them cheer, their emotions and reactions were truly priceless!
I admire these people because despite all they've been through, they never lost hope. They are indeed a true fighter!
Though Manny didn't win against Mayweather, you could still see how proud of him the people of Bantayan are. They knew in their hearts that Manny Pacquiao gallantly fought and gave his all in this fight.
From your humble beginnings, to the biggest fight of your boxing career, you showed us that the true Filipino spirit is strong and never gives up. Thank you Manny Pacquiao, you remain an inspiration to many Filipinos! You are still our champ!
You too can help Bantayan Island! For each use of the hashtag #ForEveryPinoyFighter, Pru Life UK will donate 10 pesos to the relief efforts for the Bantayan community in Cebu! Let's fight for our fighters!
