When the rain had stopped, we went out again of the hostel and rented a tricycle that brought us to Diguisit Beach. Only after 15 minutes, an awesome view of the Baler Bay welcomed us, as we enter Brgy. Zabali. I must say that Baler (and Aurora as a whole) is synonymous with serenity. It’s a place that will make you forget about the hustle and bustle of city life. A haven for reflection and a place for great relaxation.
However, as typhoon Egay had just left the Philippine area of responsibility on the day I arrived in Baler. The aftermath of the typhoon is evident with some land slides blocking Cemento road on our way to Digisit Beach. Luckily no one was hurt - as told by my friend.
So, we continued…
Our first destination, Diguisit Beach's stunning rock formations. Battered by crashing waves, these eye-catching rock formations will make every visitor in admiration for a long time. The huge rocks make up an amazing location for "cam-whoring" and photo shoots. We hopped from one rock formation to another just to take photos, with the Aniao Islets as a breath-taking back drop.
"Two small but imposing islands lie south of the islet of Dimadimalangat. These islets jut straight from the sea like bullets, with shrubs, small trees and other greenery growing on top surfaces. Kingfishers, gulls and hawks use these islets as lookout points for fish. Towering waves relentlessly pound the base of the formations, challenging even the most intrepid of rock climbers." After about an hour of candid "pictorial sessions" and some snacks, we left and bid goodbye to the beach. From there, driving further will lead you to the PAGASA Weather Station and to Dicasalarin Cove, but we decided to continue by making a U-turn. Along the way, my friend told the driver to stop so we could snap on some photos of the Diguisit waterfalls on the side of the road. You wouldn’t miss it as the water trickles down to the road. It would also be the best spot to freshen up.
It requires a bit of hiking on the side of the hill to be able to see the waterfalls' grandeur. But no worries, the delightful sight and the rushing sound of the water is enough reward for an easy 2-minute hike.
Then to our final destination, Ermita Hill - the highest point in Baler overlooking the bay. At the foot of the hill, you'll see a shrine called "Tromba Marina" which is dedicated to commemorate the families who climbed up the hill and survived the catastrophic tsunami that happened in December 27, 1735. The incident left the entire Baler town devastated, leaving only a number of surviving families.
Then our driver drove us to the top of the hill. A picturesque view of the town of Baler, Sabang Beach, Cemento and Dimadimalangat islet greeted us. We did another session of photo ops and some wandering around before going back to Sabang beach for my next activity, riding the waves!!! Yahoo!!!
For the adventurous and nature lovers out there, these are the sites worth visiting which are just a few minutes away from Baler town proper.
My 4-day "love affair" with Aurora happened last June 11-14, 2011. Here's a series of posts on what transpired during my stay in a province that I quickly have fallen in love with. This is my 4th solo trip and 27th province on my list. | |
