WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?

Capiz - The Cathedral, Provincial Capitol Building and Plaza in Roxas City

I was able to tour Roxas City a bit more after visiting the Church of Panay. I asked the driver to bring me to the city center to see how the things are going there and to check some interesting sites that the city offers. He parked his tricycle in front of the cathedral and pointed to me the things that might interest me. I requested him to just wait for me there as I roam around.

The city center has a very nice looking rotunda (round about) which I think is lovely to see at night. It has a fountain at the middle which when lighted beautifully, could be one of the interesting attractions in the city. From here, you can also see the old Capiz Bridge (now Roxas City Bridge) built in 1910 traversing Panay River.

Then I went to the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral, located just in front of the rotunda.

Considered as one of the oldest churches in the island of Panay, the parish was founded in 1707. The current structure was built in the 1800's has withstood the test of time and became silent witness to Capiz' rich history and vibrant past.

Located some several steps away from the church is the stunning and newly renovated 3-storey Capiz Provincial Capitol Building. It has an unusual color not typical to the white capitol buildings we see around the region. It has a classical architecture and the Capiz shell windows adds character to the structure.

I also saw a huge statue of Jose Rizal proudly stands at the plaza in front of the capitol building.

The city center is really busy, streets are filled with vehicles - especially tricycles. I was just observing the surroundings while taking some photos and having some small talks with the locals. I enjoyed it! They are indeed very warm and accommodating!

I also wanted to visit the ancestral house of President Manuel Roxas and the city museum, but I don't have much time. I guess that would be reserved for another day.

After that quick tour at the city center, I asked my driver to bring me to the van terminal. I'm heading to Kalibo and then Caticlan as I continue this 5-day solo adventure around Panay.

This is my tricycle tour around Roxas City and Panay Church. The driver only charged me 150 pesos for the whole tour, which is quite cheap compared to what others were asking. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a contact number during the time, I won't be able to give you his contact number.

This is part of my quick visit to Roxas City and Panay, Capiz that happened last February 8, 2012. Capiz is the 50th province on my list and this visit happend on day 1 of my "5-day Panay Island adventure". Join me as I enjoy fresh seafood, the city of Roxas and the biggest catholic church bell in Asia.

  5. It's nice to know that they have exerted effort for the upkeep of the capitol building...indeed, quite different from the whitewashed capital buildings.
