WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?

Quirino - Chasing Maddela Waterfalls

Maddela is considered as the most progressive and is the commercial center of the province of Quirino. Unknown to many, this town boasts to have a 7-staged waterfalls known as Maddela Waterfalls. Located in Brgy. Dumabato Sur, the falls offers shimmering catch basins perfect for swimming. They also have some picnic huts available for a group or family gatherings.

The locals told me that the last trip from Maddela going back to Santiago City is around 5:30 or 6:00 PM. As I left Aglipay Caves at around 3:00 in the afternoon, I was literally chasing against time to be able to get to Maddela as fast as I can. From the highway, it took me about 15 minutes before I could take a van bound for Maddela (PHP 25), which is still around 20-30 minutes away.

At the terminal in Maddela, I hired a tricycle going to the waterfalls and made an agreement with the driver that I will pay him 200 pesos including the waiting time. It took us about 20 minutes to reach Maddela Waterfalls and Forest Resort. I paid the entrance fee of 20 pesos and started the short hike to the waterfalls. Lush greens and thick forest greeted me as I walk as fast I can to get the waterfalls.

As a favorite place for relaxation among locals, I was able to catch a group (a family, I guess) enjoying themselves at the waterfalls. Since I don't have much time to really swim or see the other waterfalls, I just took some time to relax watching the waterfalls while dipping my legs into its cool waters.

HOW TO GET THERE
Buses going to Tuguegarao City in Cagayan pass by Cordon and Santiago City where vans are available for an hour trip to Maddela, Quirino. You can also take an RVT Bus bound for Maddela with bus terminal found in Sampaloc, Manila. Travel time from Manila is about 8 hours, fare is around 400 pesos.

This is part of my 3-day trip to the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Isabela that happened last March 2-4, 2012. Join me as I explore the caves and the waterfalls in Quirino, the 56th province on my list!
