The Moriones Festival is an annual colorful festival held during Holy Week in the island of Marinduque. It is a week-long celebration that starts from Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. Moriones is derived from the word "Morion", which literally means "mask" or "visor", replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks.
The festival's highlight is the via crusis during good Friday with the re-enactment of the "Passion of Christ " and the story of Longinus, a Roman centurion who speared the crucified body of Jesus Christ.
This year, the Moriones Festival is on March 24-31, 2013. All towns of Marinduque namely Mogpog, Sta. Cruz, Torrijos, Buenavista, Gasan, and Boac have their own celebration of the festival. This means that you can catch the festival anywhere in the entire province.
