After having breakfast in one of the fast food chains around the town plaza of Bangued, we rented a tricycle going to the town of Tayum, locates at 5 KM away northeast from the capital town of Bangued; travel time is around 15 minutes. This town must be well-known for its centuries-old, spanish era church dedicated to Sta. Catalina de Alejandria.
TAYUM CHURCH
Built in the 19th century by the secular clergy, this church features "palayok" art motifs and was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.HOLY SPIRIT CONVENT
Across the church is the Holy Spirit Convent. Beside the new convent, there is an old structure which I assume to be the old convento.
DON TEODORO BRILLANTES ANCESTRAL HOUSE
Few blocks away from the convent is Don Teodoro Brillantes Ancestral House. According to some sources on the internet, this ancestral house is a museum that houses the Spanish artifacts, collections and personal mementos of the Brillantes Family. Unfortunately, there is no one there to assist visitors. It seems no one is taking care of the house. The place is dirty, the roof is rotting and the walls are decaying. It is already in a state of dilapidation and definitely needs urgent rehabilitation. We just left after taking some photos.
Considering it's a weekend, there were only a few people around the town when we were there. The place is so quiet, the people are nice and friendly.
Visiting a not so well-known town is quite an experience. This quick tour around the town of Tayum, is really worth a visit.
