Samar - Basey's Centuries-Old Church, "One of the Most Beautifully-Preserved Churches in Samar"

I've been to Samar in 2011 but failed to visit the town of Basey (pronounced as "basai or basay"). That's why on my recent trip to Tacloban City for the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival 2013, I planned to have a quick visit to this town known for its church, banig-making industry and the famed Sohoton Cave. Upon arrival in Tacloban City via TigerAir Philippines, I had lunch and settled in our hotel. I fixed my things and readied for my visit to Basey.

From Tacloban City Terminal, I took a jeepney bound for Basey. The trip took about 45 minutes to reach the town proper. I alighted the jeepney as soon as I saw the stairs leading to the church.

Located on a hill, the centuries-old St. Michael the Archangel Church is one of the most beautifully-preserved churches in Samar. One of its striking features is the bell tower at the left wing of the church.

The interior of the church is simple. The walls are painted in white and the floor is made of bricks, which (I think) is newly installed.

One should not miss the mural on the ceiling and the striking altar where the image of the town's patron, Saint Michael the Archangel, is placed.

Windows are made of stained glass depicting different biblical scenes.

It is really quite fascinating to visit old churches. It gives me "a sense of going back" to the olden times. I'm glad that Basey have preserved one of its treasures.

HOW TO GET TO BASEY CHURCH

Take a jeepney, bus or van bound for Basey from Tacloban City Central Terminal. Travel time is about 45 minutes, fare is around 25-30 pesos.
