True to its slogan, Bigg's Diner is "the biggest food chain in the entire Bicol region." "Bigg," which stands for "beautiful, intelligent, gorgeous, and God-fearing", is a Filipino-owned fast food joint started way back in 1983 by three enterprising Bicolanas. It started in January 18, 1983 as "Mang Donald's", a small take-out counter in Naga City specializing in hamburgers and fries. It then became "Nald's" in 1984, until it became Carl's Dinner in September 1990. It was finally rebranded to today's Bigg's Diner in October 1994. Just last year, Bigg's Diner celebrated its 30th year in the business.
Having been to Bicol several times in the past, Bigg's Diner is no stranger to me. In fact, I try not to miss dining here whenever I visit the region.
On our recent trip to Sorsogon, we had the opportunity to try out Bigg's Diner in Sorsogon City. Upon arrival at their branch in Save More Supermarket, I noticed the 1960s American diner concept and the casual atmosphere consistent in all of their stores. Their menu is also quite extensive. Through the years, they have been known for serving western favorites such as burgers, fries and hotdogs, but now they also serve full meals such as pasta, rice toppings, sandwiches, pizza, Bicolano fusion cuisines, cakes, among many other delectable dishes.
I was quite excited, it's been a while since I had a taste of Bigg's. Here are the dishes that were served to us.
Baby Back Ribs
I'm not a baby back ribs fan but this one is really good. I love its tender and juicy meat which easily falls off the bone. Served with rice and veggie side dish, the ribs is also paired with a special sauce. This is definitely a must-try!Crispy Chicken
The chicken were juicy inside and the skin was crispy. It was perfectly deep-fried and has a very generous serving ideal for those with big appetite. I like it better than those fried chicken meals from big fastfood chains.Tenderloin Tips with Baked Mashed Potato
Served on a sizzling plate, the meat is tender and flavorful. It has a thick sauce and paired with baked mashed potato and veggie side dish which perfectly complements the meat. Also a must-try!To cap our hearty lunch, we were served with carrot cake, Pili pie and the chocolate-ty cookie monster cake. All are sinfully delicious!
Bigg's Diner is definitely the fastfood of choice when visiting the Bicol region. Their meals are well-prepared, delicious and you will surely get what your money's worth. Don't just take my word for it, try it for yourself!
On your next Bicol trip, be sure to visit one of the several Bigg's Diner branches that can be found across the region in Albay (Legazpi City, Daraga and Old Albay), Camarines Sur (Naga City, Goa, Pili and Iriga City) and Sorsogon (Sorsogon City).
