The vinta could be one of the most recognizable icons of Zamboanga City, dubbed as "Asia's Latin City". Remember those days during our grade school years where our teacher would teach us the different tourist spots in the country? We were taught that vintas can be found in Zamboanga City which is used by the locals to sail its waters.
In December 2012, during my Zamboanga City and Tawi-tawi trip with Kuya Tupe of trekero.blogspot.com, I've finally ridden the iconic vinta of Zamboanga City. It happened after we explored the nearby island of Sta. Cruz which is famous for its pink sand.
The colorful vintas used to be visible only in Zamboanga city during the annual Regatta at the La Hermosa Festival every October. But starting June 2012, the Department of Tourism Region IX launched the vinta sailing at Paseo del Mar.
Paseo del Mar is a huge leisure park located between the historical shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar (Fort Pillar) and Lantaka Hotel, the oldest hotel in the city.
When we arrived, there were about five boats or vintas with kaleidoscopic sails on standby at the Paseo del Mar. I was totally at awe when I finally saw a real vinta sailing in the waters. WHOA!!!
That feeling when finally one of your childhood dreams is about to become a reality? The feeling is unexplainable! I can't believe that I'm finally riding a real vinta in Zamboanga City!
Add the setting sun which makes a dramatic backdrop to the colorful vintas! Truly magical!
The vinta ride went so smooth and very relaxing. The view of the sunset adds drama to the whole ride which lasted for about 15 minutes.
If you wish to see more vintas, visit Zamboanga City during La Hermosa Festival every October. It is a month-long festival in honor of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of Zamboanga City.
Vinta sailing at Paseo del Mar is available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for a minimal fee of PHP 50.00 (Adult), PHP 20.00 (Student) and PHH 15.00 (Kids). Very affordable! You also get to help the locals by giving them an alternative source of living.
So, if you're visiting Zamboanga City, don't forget to ride the colorful vinta. It is certainly a ride to remember.
