Earlier this week, I attended Habitat for Humanity Philippines' first-ever Social Media Circle held at CBTL in Century City Mall, Makati City. The event was a gathering of social media influencers including respected bloggers, celebrities and personalities with strong Facebook and Twitter presence, and members of online communities from various interest groups who are willing to help spread the word about Habitat for Humanity and its work.
There is no denying the power of social media today and in everybody's daily lives. In the Philippines alone, there are 41 million internet users, 30 million of which are on social media. It enables people to build valuable connections regardless of distance, it allows unbelievably fast information exchange, it helps businesses reach a wider market, and it is undeniably today’s most widely used communication platform.
I've been supporting Habitat for Humanity Philippines in every way I can as part of my advocacy to give back to people in need. Habitat works to provide decent shelter to families living in sub-standard, deplorable conditions. Over 1.6 billion of the world's population live in inappropriate housing where children live in unhealthy conditions and families struggle daily to survive.
Habitat for Humanity wishes to proactively engage social media influencers to help them boost their social media presence in such a way that it will encourage more people to join them in their mission of helping those in need. All of us have a voice! In Social Media, you don't need to be a blogger, a celebrity or an online sensation just to have a voice. We can influence our family and friends to join Habitat for Humanity's mission.
So, how can we help?
We can help by spreading the word about Habitat for Humanity on Social Media, Be a Volunteer and Help Habitat for Humanity raise funds through www.give2habitat.org. With our help, we could build more homes for families in need of decent shelter. To know more about how to you could help, visit www.give2habitat.org/philippines.There's definitely more to social media than just posting selfies, and sharing throwbacks. I am honored to be a part of Habitat for Humanity Philippines' Social Media Circle and be one of their "Habitat Online Champions."
Visit Habitat for Humanity Philippines' website at www.habitat.org.ph or like www.facebook.com/habitatphilippines for updates on the schedule of their upcoming build projects. Together, let's help our fellow men have a decent shelter.
