Tips on How to be a Selfie Expert

Most of the time, when you're traveling alone, there's no other way but to take a selfie if you want to capture those special travel moments. Having been to all the 81 provinces in the Philippines and traveled solo most of the time, I strongly believe that I have already mastered the art of taking "selfies." I think, even before the term "selfie" was coined, we were already taking selfies for whatever reasons it may be. Do you agree?!

Nowadays, it is hard not to be obsessed in taking selfies because it simply has become a trend that everyone seems to be doing may you be a celebrity, a blogger or not. But we have to be sure that we are prepped up before we get in front of our mobile phones and snap that perfect selfie. Here are 5 useful tips to capture a perfect selfie.

1. Lighting is everything.

"Ang selfie parang pag-ibig... Dapat maliwanag..."

Before you even start thinking about the pose and how you look, you should know that lighting is a model's (in this case, you) best friend. Steer away from fluorescent light and search for warmer beams. This is why outdoor light is what most photographers find to be the ideal composition when taking photos. During the day, the golden hour before the sunset would be the most perfect time to get a selfie. Counteracting with unflattering lighting is crucial. When you do not have someone hold a reflector for you (model shoot lang ang peg!), a quick tip would be to put a white sheet or napkin near your face to highlight the peaks well.

2. Know your angles.

Ang selfie, parang girlfriend/boyfriend... You should always see the best in your partner...

Now that you’ve found the perfect lighting, knowing your best angle is just as important. Unless your face is sculpted to perfection symmetrically, then knowing whether it’s the left or right side of your face that has a better profile is important. Since this isn’t an ID photo, feel free to hold your camera a little bit higher than face level. This gives your features the attention it deserves and emphasizes your jawline. But the best tip I could give is "just be yourself!" Show your best and most genuine smile! That’s for me, is everyone’s best angle.

3. Plot the crop, choose the right background and photo composition.

Ang selfie, parang relasyon... Dapat mag-exert ng effort para mag work...

There’s always going to be an element in every photo that might ruin the perfection of your shot. Because you are limited to the technology of your gadget, cropping these elements is the next best thing to get the best photo composition. Let’s say a weird underarm situation or a part of your outfit is not hanging correctly, trim/cop it until it is gone. Choosing the best background would also do the trick in your selfie's photo composition. Choose the best place to take the photo and be sure it’s really nice, so that aside from you on the photo, your friends will also drool over on the place you’re at.

4. Edit. But don't overdo it.

Ang selfie, parang ugali ng tao... Dapat totoo...

As a seasoned traveler, I shy away from using filters because I want to show everyone what the place really looks like. But there are times when filters are needed to enhance the photo quality or to give the photo a more appealing feel. However, please do not aim for a super "unrealistic" result. It still has to look natural and real. Adjusting the brightness, contrast and make the image sharper to make it crisper are acceptable. There are tons of mobile applications that now offers varying filters and editing features. It's okay to edit your photo, just not to go overboard.

5. Invest on a good smartphone.

Ang selfie, parang negosyo... Dapat mag invest, para lumago...

This phone features an impressive 8-megapixel front camera with a wide f/2.0 aperture lens and a sensor size of ¼ inches. Amazing right?! One of the best things about the OPPO F1 Selfie Expert is the Screen Flash that turns the OPPO F1's entire screen display into a camera flash which is perfect in taking selfies even in low light conditions.
