Singapore's Changi Airport has always been hailed as one of the "Best Airports in the World." With the addition of its new Terminal 4, it certainly sets the bar higher when it comes to airport standards and passenger experience.
The world's best airport just got even better!
Earlier this week, I went to Singapore together with other members of the media for an exclusive media preview of the New Changi Airport Terminal 4. We were invited by Changi Airport Group and Cebu Pacific Air as it will be one of of the first Philippine carriers that will be utilizing the new airport terminal as soon as it opens later this year.
Changi Airport T4's Boutique Design
Built on the southern end of Changi Airport, T4 is a two-story, 25 meter-high building with a gross floor area of 225,000 square meters (about 27 football pitches), including the car parks, coach stands and taxi deck. Showcasing a boutique design, its interiors are based on symmetrical petal design, inspired by the orchid petal. You can see it almost everywhere in the airport - the skylights, marble flooring, carpets, air-con binnacles and even the dustbins and holders for fire extinguishers.
Terminal 4's use of high ceilings with skylights and glass walls allows natural light in and has a visual-transparent concept which is a first for Changi Airport. It also simulates a natural environment with the use of many real plants and trees. The landscaping alone covers about 2,000 square meters, and they have planted 186 large trees inside the terminal.
Innovation in Technology
With the innovative use of technology, the new Changi Airport Terminal 4 promises a new travel experience for air travelers. Terminal 4 will be Changi Airport's first terminal to offer end-to-end Fast And Seamless Travel (FAST) for departing passengers.
With the assitance of one the airport personnel, we got to have a feel of how convenient to depart at Changi Terminal 4. With the extensive use of technology with the use of facial recognition software, FAST will redefine the passengers' travel experience, enhance operational efficiency, and raise productivity. When in full operation, FAST is said to save about 20% in manpower. More to that, FAST will also enable passengers to enjoy the flexibility of checking in at their own convenience. Self-service option are available at each stage of departure - check-in, bag drop, immigration, and boarding. How cool is that?!
Arts and Entertainment at T4
Passengers traveling through and visiting Changi Airport's Terminal 4 will enjoy a visually immersive and theatrical experience with specially curated art and entertainment features of the airport terminal. These art pieces and features were curated by local and international artists. It includes an array of traditional art forms, such as sculptures, as well as kinetic and multimedia installations that provide a colorful and enriching interlude from the hustle and bustle of travel.
Retails Shops and F&B Outlets at T4
More than 80 retail and dining outlets covering 16,00 square meters are expected to serve thousand of passengers when Changi Airport's Terminal 4 becomes fully operational. It will also be home to the "Heritage Zone" which draws inspiration from Singapore's Peranakan shop outlets. This is the first time that Changi Airport showcases Singapore's local culture and flavors to international passengers. The Heritage Zone, which is located at the transit area will give passengers a glimpse of the evolution of shop house architecture from the 1880s to 1950s, as well as enjoy a special performance of a "Penarakan Love Story" displayed on a 10m x 6m LED screen on the Penarakan facade.
The Heritage Zone completes the multi-sensory experience of local culture through taste and smell with the integration of retail and F&B outlets housing local brands like Bee Cheng Hiang, Bengawan Solo, Curry Times, Eu Yan Sang, and Heavenly Wang.
Indeed, Changi Airport T4 is a destination in itself and I can't wait to be back in Singapore via this new facility.
