Well-known for being a honeymoon paradise, Santorini is a Greek island that is famous for its vibrant cliffs and dramatic landscape forged by volcanic eruptions that occurred centuries ago. Surrounded by a plethora of stunning beaches with white, black and red sand, Santorini is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
With its beautiful, unique views and stunning sunsets, it’s no surprise that this Greek island is a firm favourite destination for couples and weddings. If you are hoping to plan a romantic trip away with your significant other, then Santorini should definitely be a destination that makes it to your shortlist. Here are our top tips for planning the perfect Santorini getaway.
Tip #1. Opt for a Santorini Villa:
When it comes to choosing the accommodation that you will stay in during your time on the island, there are plenty of hotels to choose from, from budget rooms to four- and five-star hotels with luxury amenities. However, the best choice to make when staying on Santorini is to hire your own villa for the duration of your stay; it’s well worth any extra that you’ll pay and some villas can even be booked at a lower price than some hotel rooms on the island.
With a villa, you’ll have a true home-from-home experience, with plenty of space and privacy to enjoy yourself and relax. If you’re travelling as a couple, then smaller villas for two people make for an intimate and comfortable stay. The Santorini villas from Blue Villas range from luxurious 1-bedroom villas to family-fun 7 bedroom villas, so you’re guaranteed to find something that suits your holiday needs.
With companies such as Blue Villas, larger groups, (often wedding parties), can enjoy larger, spacious villas, some of which have over ten bedrooms to accommodate up to 38 guests. Last of all, one of the best reasons to book a villa is simply so that you can enjoy a private pool!
Tip #2. Getting Around:
Before landing on the island, it’s a good idea to determine how you plan to get around. With so many different places and things to see on all corners of the island, having a good knowledge of the local public transport links is essential for most holidaymakers.
Santorini has a local bus service that is very popular with tourists; this runs from the central station located in Fira and will take you to various locations around the island. However, be aware that the bus does not run to a schedule, so it can be difficult to plan. And, the last bus is at midnight which could put some restrictions on your plans.
If you require more freedom when getting around, private car hire could be a better option for you – there are numerous car hire companies available on the island.
Tip #3. Explore Things to Do:
Whether you want to get involved with physical activities such as diving or hiking or would rather relax and soak up the sunshine on the beach, there’s plenty to see and do in Santorini during a romantic trip with your one and only.
If you’re feeling up for some walking, then be sure to take the 9km hike between Fira and Oia, where you’ll be able to enjoy some unique and stunning views of the Aegean Sea – there’s plenty of perfect photo opportunities along the way. At the end of the four-hour hike, the picturesque village of Oia is well worth the walk, filled with creamy-coloured houses and stunning blue-domed churches.
It’s also the most perfect spot on the island for watching the sunset. Other amazing things to do in Santorini include diving, beach hopping, and volcano tours complete with mud baths and hot springs, which are said to have some awesome health benefits!
