Most international flights to Taipei lands at Taoyuan International Airport, which is located about 40 km southwest of Taipei. Travel time from Taoyuan International Airport to Taipei is about 40 minutes to an hour going to Taipei City. There are several options to get to Taipei: train, bus, taxi, and private airport transfers.
Taoyuan Airport MRT
The train from the airport to Taipei Main Station costs around NT$ 160 per person. Travel time is about 40 minutes. All you need to do is take the Airport MRT and alight at Taipei Main Station. The third option is to take a taxi, which costs around NT$ 900-1200 depending on where you are going in the city.Private Car Transfer
For convenience, you may also avail a private airport transfer. This is a good option if you want a comfortable travel from the airport to the city, especially if you're already tired, sleepy, and carrying big luggage with you. It's also ideal for small groups so that you can share the cost and save more. I also recommend it for families, especially if you are traveling with kids or with senior citizens. You may also book this when traveling from Taipei going to Taoyuan International Airport.Weather in Taiwan
Taiwan enjoys four seasons. Winter in Taiwan is from December to February, spring is from March to May, summer is from June to August, and autumn is from September to November.
I use available weather apps on my smartphone or you can also download Accuweather App to check the weather forecast. I recommend that you always check the weather before your flight. This way, you can plan well what clothes to bring on your travel to Taiwan.
When is the Best Time to Visit Taiwan?
Our first visit in Taiwan is in November and it was cold at around 16 to 20 degrees Celsius. It was the end of autumn but for 5 days that we were there, it was raining for 4 days. Be sure to always bring an umbrella, raincoat, or a jacket with you in case of rains.
We've also visited Taiwan during summer and it's really hot and humid with average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. If you're traveling during summer, wear light and breathable clothes and always stay hydrated by drinking a lot of milk tea. Joke lang yung milk tea! Hahaha!
If you're visiting the mountainous areas such as Nantou, be sure that you're prepared for the cold weather. Bring thick jackets, gloves, and bonnet.
How Many Days to Spend in Taiwan?
Having been to Taiwan 4 times in the past, for me, how many days to spend in Taiwan depend on the tourist spots and attractions you want to visit, the activities you want to do, and of course on how much budget you have. If it's your first time to visit Taiwan, I highly suggest that you maximize your time by spending at least 5 days and 4 nights in Taiwan. This will also allow you to have more time to visit destinations outside Taipei - such as Keelung and New Taipei City. If you're on a budget or for just a quick long weekend getaway, you may consider spending 3 days and 2 nights in Taiwan to see and experience most of its tourist spots, attractions and activities. You may refer to my sample Taipei, Taiwan DIY itineraries towards the end of this post or you may also read my post Taiwan Sample Itineraries for 3, 4, 5 days tour.
Taiwan Time Zone
Time zone in Taiwan is observed at UTC+08:00 and uses China Standard Time all year round. There is no time difference between Taiwan time and the Philippines. Also, there are no Daylight Saving Time rules for this time zone.
Useful Mandarin Words and Phrases
Mandarin Chinese is what majority of Taiwanese use. It's always good to know a few of them. So, before you pack up for your Taiwan adventure, here are the 10 most common mandarin words and phrases you need to start learning before traveling to Taiwan.
- Hello - Nĭ hăo (sounds like Nee how)
- Thank You - Xièxiè (sounds like Shieh-shieh)
- Good morning - Zǎo (sounds like Zhow)
- Goodnight - Wǎn'ān (sound like One-un)
- I don't understand - Tīng bù dǒng (sound like teeng boo dong)
- How much? - Duō shǎo qián (sounds like dwo shaow chyen?)
- Excuse Me / Pardon / Sorry - Bù hǎo yìsi (sounds like boo haow eeh si)
- Where is…? - Zài nǎli (sounds like dzaiy nah lee)
- I want to go to… - Wǒ yào qù… (sounds like wo yaow chyoo)
- Restroom - Cèsuǒ (sounds like Tse soo-oh)
Where to Exchange Taiwan Currency?
Taiwan currency is the New Taipei Dollar (NTD) which is about 0.03 USD or 1.66 PHP during our trip. You can ONLY exchange money at the airport or at banks. So if you're traveling during the weekend, be sure to change your money before leaving the airport because banks are closed during weekends. When traveling to Taiwan, it's better if you bring US Dollars or Euros. Please note that very few banks accept Philippine Peso and exchange rate is terribly low.
Alternatively, you can also withdraw from many ATMs in Taiwan. You can find ATMs in many places in Taiwan, such as trains stations, shopping malls, and convenience stores. This is a great option when you run out of cash. Just make sure that your card or bank allows international transactions. I highly recommend that you call your bank before your flight and make a travel advisory that you will be withdrawing money from ATMs abroad. If you failed to inform your bank, your card might get blocked because of "unusual activity" and may cause you not to use your card anymore.
Money changers at the airport offer slightly better rates than most banks in Taipei, if not almost the same rates. Based on experience, the best thing to do is just withdraw money from ATMs. Just withdraw the money you need and the maximum allowed per transaction to save on the withdrawal fee which is around 170 pesos depending on your bank. With withdrawing money from the ATMs, you won't lose much of your money's worth in the conversion.
Pocket Wifi Rental and Data SIM/eSIM in Taipei
TAIWAN DATA SIM CARD & ESIM
How to stay connected to the internet in Taiwan? I highly recommend buying a local sim card if you want to connect to the internet in Taiwan. I also recommend that you purchase Taiwan sim card/eSIM in advance via Klook. You can choose from 3, 5, 8, 10 or 15 days unlimited data depending on your trip duration and just pick it up at Taiwan Taoyuan Airport upon arrival. With a local SIM card, you have a local number and a few dollars that you can use to send SMS or make a call. This is ideal if you're traveling solo or as a couple.
BOOK AND RESERVE HERE: 4G SIM Card for Taiwan (Airport Pick Up)
√ TRAVEL TIP: You may also avail a 4G/5G Unlimited Data eSIM that comes with an EasyCard/iPASSCard. You can pick this up upon arrival at Taoyuan Airport. Getting an eSIM is my most recommended because you won't need to change your physical sim to a local sim. Since your Philippine sim card is still inserted on your phone, you can still receive text messages and calls from the Philippines.
POCKET WIFI RENTAL IN TAIWAN
You may also consider availing a portable travel WiFi which is more affordable than subscribing to mobile roaming service and using your mobile data in connecting to the internet. With a portable travel WiFi, you can enjoy unlimited 4G internet service anywhere in Taiwan, and you can share the internet connection with your travel buddies or up to 8 devices. This is ideal if you're traveling with a group because you could also split the cost.
These pocket WiFis are very in-demand, so make sure that you reserve one before your flight to Taiwan. You can reserve your handy and portable travel WiFi via Klook and just pick it up upon arrival at Taoyuan International Airport.

How to Get around Taipei?
Taipei's transportation system is very efficient and convenient. When going around the city, you can take the bus, hail a taxi, or ride the trains. Buses can be quite confusing if you don't know the routes. If you're on a tight budget, taxis are quite expensive if you're traveling alone. But if you're traveling with a group, you can take the taxi and share the fare with your friends to save on travel expenses.
For me, the best way to travel around Taipei is to take the MRT. It's quite convenient, easy, and cheap. It's not that complicated because it only has 5 lines. Most of the tourist spots are located near an MRT Station, so getting to where you want to go is easy and convenient using the MRT. Single journey fare is from 20 NTD to 50 NTD, depending on the distance. And if you're using an Taipei Transport Fun Pass, you can get unlimited rides on the Taipei MRT. To help you in traveling around Taipei using the MRT, you can download Taipei Metro App on Google Play or Apple App Store.
TAIPEI TRANSPORT FUN PASS
I highly recommend that you purchase a Taipei Transport Fun Pass. With this pass that you can pick up right at the airport, you can travel easily around Taipei. Get unlimited rides on the Taipei MRT, city buses, 5 Taiwan Tourist Shuttle routes, and Maokong Gondola. Choose between one to two days of unlimited transportation in Taipei.
EASYCARD
I also recommend that you buy a rechargeable card such as EasyCard so you will not need to buy train tickets (tokens) every time you take the MRT. You can choose an Easycard only or Easycard with 4G SIM Card. I suggest you get a EasyCard and 4G SIM Card Package because it already comes with an EasyCard, and a 4G SIM Card that you could use to connect to the internet while in Taiwan. The best thing about using an EasyCard is that you get a discount for every ride compared to buying a single journey token (ticket) every time you take the MRT. Get one because you'll definitely need it!
√ TRAVEL TIP: To save on travel expenses, you may also avail a 4G/5G Unlimited Data eSIM that comes with an EasyCard/iPASSCard. You can pick this up upon arrival at Taoyuan Airport.
TAIPEI UNLIMITED FUN PASS

5-DAY JOINT TRAIN PASS (THSR+TR)

MAOKONG GONDOLA
If you wish to visit the quaint and humble village of Maokong which is sitting on the top of a mountain in Taipei, you may take a scenic ride via the Maokong Gondola. With the gondola ride, you can get panoramic views of the city as you ascend to the summit going to the village. Best of all, the cable cars are crystal cabin with glass-bottoms, giving you a bird's eye view of the landscape below. How cool is that?!

Where to Stay in Taipei?
During our previous travels to Taiwan, we stayed at budget hotels, hostels and at a luxury hotel. I recommend that you choose an accommodation that is near an MRT Station so it will be easier for you to go around and to travel from one place to another. You may choose a hotel or hostel near Taipei Main Station, Ximen Station, or Taipei 101 Station. Here are the hotels and hostels that we have personally tried and stayed at during our previous trips in Taiwan.
