Looking for new and unique things to do in Taiwan?
Earlier this month, we were invited by Taiwan's Travel Times to experience different DIY workshops in Taiwan. The tour is based on the OTOP (One Town One Product) activities which aim to give us hands-on experience on how to make local delicacies, souvenirs, handmade products, and local products from different towns and cities in Taiwan. I'm so happy to be back in Taiwan and glad to know that this trip will be so much different from my previous trips because we'll be doing new and unique experiences.
First in our itinerary is the Pineapple Cake Making Workshop at The Kuo Yuan Ye Museum of Cake and Pastry. Located in Shilin District, The Kuo Yuan Ye Museum of Cake and Pastry is a pastry culture and making museum in Taipei, Taiwan. It has two branches in Taiwan, one is in Shilin District, and the other in Yangmei District in Taoyuan City.
As a workshop and museum, they also have a showroom that features Kuo Yuan Ye's humble beginnings which date back to 1867 when they first built their first branch in Shilin District. It also showcases historical exhibits about Taiwanese cake and pastry making, festivals, customs and traditional folklore that will surely be a learning experience for everyone. One of the highlights of our visit is the make-your-own (DIY) activities and workshops offered by The Kuo Yuan Ye Museum of Cake and Pastry, which we truly enjoyed.
At the workshop, we were taught on the different steps in making Pineapple Shortcakes from mixing the raw ingredients, making the dough, to stuffing the Pineapple Jam into the dough, to molding the shortcake and packaging the finished product. It's my first time to do this and I truly enjoyed it. Best of all, we got to take home the pineapple cake gift box that we made as a souvenir. Yey!
We also had a tour at the museum where we learned a lot about the company's history, as well as about Taiwanese weddings, traditions and practices. Visiting the museum will let you have a trip through the past and to the past 100 years of Taiwan's pastry culture and history.
Visiting Taiwan is not complete without tasting the Pineapple Shortcake which is a traditional Taiwanese pastry. You'll find it sold almost everywhere in Taiwan. As one of Taiwan's most popular traditional treats, it makes an awesome and delicious “pasalubong” to your family and friends back home.
Overall, the Pineapple Cake making workshop was fun and interactive! It's an ideal activity for anyone looking for unique and new things to do in Taiwan. I'm quite sure that your family especially the kids, and your group of friends will enjoy and learn something new in this DIY activity. Don’t miss this workshop that will let you to experience the handmade process of pineapple shortcake making when visiting Taiwan! Highly recommended!
