Looking for DIY things to do in Taiwan? Experience soap making workshop at TeaSoap!
I remember when I was still at school, we had a class on how to make a soap. It was a fun and learning experience. That's the first and last time I got the chance to do it. That is why I am so happy when I learned that part of our recent Taiwan OTOP Tour is soap making workshop and soap museum tour at TeaSoap in New Taipei City.
TeaSoap since 1957 is located at Sanxia District in New Taipei City, Taiwan. It started in 1957, and was founded by the Lin family. According to Taiwan Today, "Lin Yi-cai (林義財) began learning how to make soap in the mid-1940s because of the dermatitis on his hands. After trying every brand of soap on the market and failing to find anything that did not exacerbate his condition, Lin set about trying to concoct a gentler cleanser. He developed a system for extracting lye that resulted in a product that is kinder to the skin, and went on to found Mei Sheng Tang Chemical Co. with his younger brother in 1957."
With more than 50 years of experience in the soap industry, they are now known as TeaSoap, since its signature product contains green tea. In 2010, the Lin family turned their old workshop in Sanxia District into a tourism factory that is now frequented by tourists wanting to experience hands-on DIY soap making, and to learn more about the history of the soap industry in Taiwan.
Tourism Factory Tour
With the guidance of their professional guide, we had a very insightful and in-depth tour of TeaSoap's museum. The itinerary includes: understanding of Meishengtang, the history of soap industry, and a visit to the cultural relics of production lines of soap making.
DIY Handmade Soap Making
We also got to experience how to make a soap. From the few simple steps of grinding the flowers and other materials, adding essential oils that soothes our smell, adding hot boiled liquid soap, pouring into the soap molders, cooling the soap, demolding and packaging the finished product. It is definitely a unique and exciting handmade soap-making experience.
DIY Handmade Soap Printing
Lastly, we got to try the traditional soap printing where we were given a bar of soap and from the wide array of stamps, we chose the design we want to put into the soap bar.
Also at the tourism factory is a small shop showcasing TeaSoap's wide array of products.
This activity will surely bring out the creativity in you. It's an ideal activity and new things to do in Taiwan that the family, group of friends, and kids of all ages will surely love and enjoy.
