3-day Taipei Itinerary Using the Taipei Fun Pass
Here are the destinations we visited, food we ate, and activities we did during the 3-day Taipei Fun Pass Familiarization Tour.
Day 1 - Gold Museum, Jiufen and Miramar Entertainment Park
On our first day, we visited the Gold Museum, Jiufen Old Street, and Miramar Entertainment Park. All entrance fees and transportation on the Metro Rail (MRT) and shuttle buses going to New Taipei City and back to Taipei are covered by the Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass.
Breakfast at JSP
Time Spent: 30 minutesFirst, we had breakfast at JSP which is just walking distance from City Inn Hotel Plus (Check room rates and availability) where we are staying near Ximen MRT Station. It is a popular breakfast joint in Ximen that sells an array of stuff from burgers, toasts, omelettes, to sandwiches, and many more. After having our breakfast, we walked to Ximen bus station and took bus number 965 to our next destination, which is the Gold Museum in Riufang. To avail of the unlimited free ride on shuttle buses, simply tap your Taipei Fun Pass card at the card reader upon entering the bus.
Gold Museum
Time Spent: 1 hour and 40 minutesLocated in the mountainous town of Jinguashi in Ruifang District, the Gold Museum is a museum that features the gold mining industry of New Taipei City, Taiwan. It is a living museum composed of several buildings showcasing the local mining industry and how people lived during the glorious days of mining in the area. Visiting this museum will let you enter the four-joined Japanese style residence, the Environmental Building, Gold Refining Building, Jin-shui Special Exhibition Hall, and the Gold Building. I love that some of the displays here are interactive and will let you feel the life of the miners during those times.
The Gold Museum is located at No. 8 Jinguang Road, Jinguashi, Ruifang District, New Taipei City. You can get here by taking bus number 965 from Ximen which will bring you directly to the Gold Museum. It is open daily from 09:30 am to 06:00 pm.
Lunch at Fun Farm Restaurant
Time Spent: 40 minutesFor lunch, we went to the Fun Farm Restaurant inside the Gold Museum. If you dine here, you can get free coffee or black tea when you buy their set of traditional bento meal.
Jiufen Old Street
Time Spent: 1 hour and 30 minutesAfter exploring the Gold Museum and having our lunch at the Fun Farm Restaurant, we took again the bus 965 to Jiufen Old Street. Upon entering the bus, just tap your Taipei Fun Pass on the card reader next to the driver to avail the free ride.
Jiufen or Chiufen Village is an old mining town that is now a popular tourist destination near Taipei. Located in the mountain area of Ruifang District in New Taipei City, Taiwan, Jiufen Village is a quaint village with rich history and culture to tell. This is where you'll find alleys of shops selling a wide array of products and food items, as well as old tea houses that are surely a sight to behold. It's my most favorite place in Taiwan, and I'm so happy to be back here!
Miramar Entertainment Park
Time Spent: 1 hour and 30 minutesAfter exploring Jiufen Old Street, we went back to the bus station and took bus number 965 going to to Taipei. Again, just tap your Taipei Fun Pass at the card reader to get a free ride. We alighted at Beimen MRT Station in Taipei where to took the MRT Green line to Nanjing Fuxing station and then transferred to the Brown Line to Jiannan Rd. Station. We have now arrived to our next destination, which is Miramar Entertainment Park located just across Jiannan Rd. Station.
Miramar Entertainment Park is one of Taipei's largest shopping malls. Located at Dazhi area in Zhongshan District, it is an awesome shopping and entertainment complex with a lot of shops, restaurants, IMAX movie theater, arcade games, and amusement center. One of the must-see here is the Ferries at the mall's rooftop standing at 70 meters tall. Using our Taipei Fun Pass, we got to experience one full ride on the Ferries wheel which gave us an amazing view of the city. Kids and "kids at heart" will surely love this.
The best time to visit is during late afternoon to early evening for you to enjoy the stunning sunset and the beautiful city lights at night. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy during our visit and we didn't catch the sunset. I'll definitely visit this again on my next trip to Taipei.
Dinner at Dian Shui Lou
Time Spent: 1 hour and 30 minutesAfter the Ferries wheel ride, we walked towards Dian Shui Lou where we had our dinner. When you dine here, you can get free original steamed dumplings when you order the colorful dumpling set by just showing your Taipei Fun Pass. Food were great! I loved the colorful dumplings, the stinky tofu, the pork buns, spring rolls, and the Taiwanese pancakes. Yummmmm!!!
After that, we called it a day and went back to our hotel in Ximen via MRT. To get back to Ximen, just take the MRT Brown Line from Jiannan Rd. Station to Nanjing Fuxing Station then transfer to MRT Green Line and take the train to Ximen Station.
Day 2 - National Palace Museum, Shilin Residence, Dadaocheng, and Taipei 101
On our 2nd day, we basically toured around Taipei City's top attractions. Again, all entrance fees and transportation were included in the Taipei Fun Pass.
Breakfast at Mr. Brown Cafe
Time Spent: 50 minutesWe woke up early and head to Mr. Brown Cafe for breakfast. From Ximen Station, we took the MRT to Shuanglian Station then walked towards Mr. Brown Café. As an authorized store or partner-restaurant of Taipei Fun Pass, when you buy a series of Latte Coffee at Mr. Brown Cafe, you can enjoy the second cup at 50% off. Food were also great. I enjoyed their Clubhouse Sandwich paired with my hot Coffee Latte.
National Palace Museum
Time Spent: 1 hour and 40 minutesWe then walked back to Shuanglian Station and took the MRT to Shilin Station. From Shilin Station, we took Bus Red 30 (R30) which brought us directly to the National Palace Museum.
Located along Zhi Shan Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, the National Palace Museum is one of Taiwan's most popular museums. It has a permanent collection of nearly 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks, and is considered as one of the largest of its type in the world.
Not to missed at the museum are their most popular collections such as the Jadeite Cabbage which is a piece of jadeite carved into the form of a bokchoy cabbage; the meat-shaped stone which really looks like a stewed pork; and the Cauldron which has a text cast inside consisting of 500 characters and arranged in 32 lines and is believed to be the longest bronze inscription in the world.
The best thing about using your Taipei Fun Pass at the National Palace Museum, is that you don't need to fall in line at the ticket booths. Just show and tap the card on the card reader at the entrance gate and you can directly enter the museum. Also, you can get 10% discount on purchases at their souvenir shop. How cool is that?!
Shilin Official Residence
Time Spent: 1 hour and 35 minutesAfter exploring the National Palace Museum, we took again the Bus R30 and alighted at the Taipei High School bus stop and walked for about 5-10 minutes to Shilin Official Residence. Located along Zhongshan North Road, it features beautiful Chinese and Western gardens, as well as the home of the Taiwan's former President, the late Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling.
Entering the complex is free, but if you want to enter the Main Building of Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence, there's an entrance fee of $100 NTD. But if you have a Taipei Fun Pass, you don't need to pay anything because it's already included in the pass.
At the Main Building of Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence, you'll get to see how the late president and his wife lived their everyday lives, how he held family get-togethers, as well as how he received guests into his home. It is open everyday except Mondays, from 09:30 am to 12:00 nn and 01:30 pm to 05:00 pm. Picture taking is not allowed inside the house.
After visiting the house, you may also explore the surrounding gardens with a wide array of colorful flowers.
Lunch at Coffee Alley
Time Spent: 1 hourWe then walked towards Zhongzheng Road in Shilin District to Coffey Alley where we had our lunch. If you have a Taipei Fun Pass, you can get 10% discount on all purchases by just presenting your card.
Dadaocheng District
Time Spent: 1 hour and 30 minutesAfter our yummy lunch at Coffee Alley, we walked back to Shilin MRT Station and took the MRT to Daqiaotou Station. We took exit 1 and walked towards Dadaocheng District. It's an old street where visitors could discover the historic side of Taipei. It's a fascinating place to explore with streets lined up with old buildings, shops, and restaurants. Charming and unique, it’s also a good place for shopping and eating! Certainly, Taipei’s Dadaocheng neighborhood is well worth a visit.
Lee Cake Main Store
Time Spent: 30 minutesWhen in Dadaocheng District, don't miss visiting Lee Cake Main Store along Dihua Street. If you have a Taipei Fun Pass, you can get a box of complimentary match-making cakes. These cakes which are imprinted with words "The Gods will grant you a perfect match," is so popular in Taipei and is said to bless you with a loving and lasting relationship. You can take it to the temple to pray the Old Man under the Moon (aka Chinese Cupid) to grant your wish for a loving life partner.
Dinner at Mu Hills Restaurant
Time Spent: 1 hourFor dinner, we visited Muhills Restaurant which is a casual dining restaurant serving great-tasting pasta, pizza, and cakes. Using your Taipei Fun Pass, you can get 10% discount on all your purchases. It is located at No. 173, Section 1, Dihua St, Datong District, Taipei City and is open daily from 12:00 nn to 09:00 pm.
Freebies at Shou Shing Fang at Taipei 101 Store
Time Spent: 30 minutesAfter dinner, we walked back to Daqiaotou Station, and took the train to Dongmen Station. We then transferred to the MRT red line and took the train to Taipei101 / World Trade Center Station. Upon arrival, we went to the ground floor where Shou Xin Fang is located. It is known locally for making one of the tastiest cakes. It's a great place to buy some Pineapple Cakes that you could bring back home to your family and friends.
If you have the Taipei Fun Pass, you can get 10% discount on your purchases. You can also take a photo of you at their store and upload it on your social media account, and you'll get a free gift from them. Just show them your uploaded photo.
Taipei 101 Observatory
Time Spent: 1 hour and 30 minutesA trip to Taiwan will not be complete without visiting the towering Taipei 101. It is one of Taiwan's most popular tourist attractions and most-photographed landmark. It is considered as one of the tallest buildings in the world. With a height of 509.2 meters, it held the record of being the "tallest building in the world" from 2004 to 2010.
One of the top things to do in Taipei is climbing Taipei 101's Observatory. Using the Taipei Fun Pass, you just need to go to the ticket booths at the 5th floor. Show your Taipei Fun Pass card for them to scan it and then get your physical paper ticket to the observatory. You then go to the elevator and line up to get to the observatory at the 89th floor.
This is my 2nd time to go up Taipei 101's Observatory, but this visit is totally different because it is during the night. I love the beautiful city lights of Taipei. I'm also happy that finally, I get to go to Taipei 101's outdoor observatory.
After about 1.5 hours, we went down and proceeded to the MRT station and went back to our hotel.
Day 3 - Yehliu Geopark and Yuming Museum
For our 3rd day, we had a quick breakfast and left the hotel for a long travel to the northern coast of Taiwan. This day, we will explore and visit Yehliu Geopark and Yuming Museum.
Yehliu Geopark
Time Spent: 1 hour and 50 minutesLocated in Northern Taiwan, Yehliu Geopark is a natural landscape filled with peculiar rock formations, and sceneries that are truly amazing. This scenic attraction will bring you into a world that is like a scene from a movie. Here, you'll see different rock formations that are awesome works of nature. Some of the rock formations were given names representing their shapes, such as the "Mushroom Rocks," "Sea Candles," "Fairy Shoe," and the most-popular is the "Queen's Head."
As one of the most popular tourist attractions in northern Taiwan, getting here is easy enough. If you're coming from Ximen, to get to Yehliu Geopark, you just need to take the MRT to Taipei Main Station then transfer the MRT Red Line to Tamsui Station. Upon arrival at Tamsui Station, take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle service bus number 862 going to Yehliu Geopark. Just use your Taipei Fun Pass for the free rides on the Taipei Metro and on the shuttle bus. As easy as that!
The best thing about having a Taipei Fun Pass is that you don't need to fall in line to buy a ticket. You just need to show the card at the entrance gate and enter the Geopark hassle-free! As one of the most-popular destinations in Northern Taiwan, expect hordes of tourists at the park especially during weekends. So, it's really best if you have the Taipei Fun Pass so you could skip the long lines.
Buffet Lunch at Fisherman's Kitchen
Time Spent: 1 hourLocated just a few meters away from Yehliu Geopark is Fisherman's Kitchen at In House Hotel. They offer affordable and tasty buffet lunch that you can enjoy after exploring Yehliu Geopark. If you have a Taipei Fun Pass, you can get 10% discount on your bill. Be sure to check them out!
Juming Museum
Time Spent: 2 hoursAfter our sumptuous buffet lunch, we took again the shuttle bus number 862 to Juming Museum. You can find the bus stop just across In House Hotel. Travel time to Juming Museum is about 20-30 minutes.
Juming Museum is a huge outdoor museum built by internationally-renowned master sculptor Ju Ming. Opened in 2009, it showcases thousands of Mr. Ju Ming's creations. It is so huge, and is actually dubbed as "Taiwan’s largest outdoor art museum." So, when visiting Juming Museum, be sure to allot at least 2 hours to fully enjoy the many artworks, attractions, and IG-worthy spots that you can find inside the museum.
Set in a vast outdoor space with nature and the mountains as backdrops, visiting Juming Museum makes you feel to be part of the artworks. Some of the artworks here were Juming’s works that he exhibited in different parts of the world such as Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and Luxembourg. Don’t miss visiting Taichi Plaza, Human World Square and Sport Square and be amazed by his exemplary artworks. Although majority of the installations and artworks are outdoors, they also have indoor museums that showcase other Juming's artworks.
The Juming Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm. The museum is closed every Monday except on National Holidays. Don't miss to include this in your Taiwan itinerary! You will surely enjoy your visit at Juming Museum!
After about 2 hours of exploring and appreciating Juming Museum, we went back to the bus stop which is located just outside the museum and took bus number 862 to Tamsui MRT Station. Then we took the train to Ximen Station and walked towards Carrefour.
