Planning a trip to Marinduque this holy week to witness the Moriones Festival 2019?
Moriones Festival is a Lenten festival in the province of Marinduque. It is considered as one of the most-attended festivals in the Philippines during lenten season. It starts from Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday with various activities happening in the different towns of Marinduque. One of the highlights of the festival is the "Via Crusis" held every Good Friday with a very dramatic re-enactment of the "Passion of Christ" along the streets of every town of Marinduque.

What is Moriones Festival?
Originated in the town of Mogpog, the Moriones Festival is a week-long festival and is one of the major tourist drawers of Marinduque province. "Moriones" was coined from the word "morion," which literally means mask. During the festival, the scary and mighty Morions roam around the towns of Marinduque to showcase their colorful Roman centurion masks and costumes to the delight of the spectators attending the different events lined up during the Moriones Festival.
If you're planning to witness the Moriones Festival 2019, you should plan your trip ahead. Every town in Marinduque has their own version of the Moriones Festival. This 2019, Moriones Festival is set on April 14 to 21, 2019 (Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday). Be sure to save the dates of Moriones Festival 2019 and plan your trip ahead!

How to Get to Marinduque from Manila?
The fastest and most convenient way to get to Marinduque is to take a flight from Manila to Marinduque. Cebu Pacific Air has 3 scheduled flights per week - every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Flights depart from Manila via Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4 and arrive in Marinduque Airport in the town of Gasan. Travel time is around 40 minutes.

Another option in getting to Marinduque from Manila is to take the bus to Dalahican Port in Lucena City, then take a ferry/RORO vessel to Marinduque. You can find buses from Cubao or Buendia with daily trips from Metro Manila to Lucena City. In Dalahican Port, you'll find ferry/RORO vessels such as Montenegro Shipping Lines and Starhorse Shipping Lines that have regular trips from Lucena to Marinduque.
There are three major ports in Marinduque: Buyabod Port in the town of Sta. Cruz, Cawit Port in Boac, and Balanacan Port in Mogpog. If you're visiting the capital town of Boac, you may take the ferry to Balanacan Port or to Cwaut Port. Be sure to take the correct ferry going to the town you want to visit.
IMPORTANT: Dalahican Port is open 24 hours. Expect it to be crowded with passengers during weekends and holy week due to the huge number of tourists and locals wanting to spend a long vacation in Marinduque. You may also experience waiting for quite some time or to line up for several hours at the ticketing booths to get a ferry ticket. You really have to be patient during these times because it will be really hard to get to Marinduque. You can read my previous experience in Dalahican Port where we waited for 6 hours to take the ferry.
TRAVEL TIP: To avoid the huge crowd of passengers waiting to take the ferry to Marinduque, I highly recommended that you schedule your trip to Marinduque as early as Holy Tuesday. Same with going back to Lucena City, you have to avoid the Easter Sunday and Monday after easter when most of the locals and tourists leave Marinduque. It is best if you take the ferry and leave Marinduque on Black Saturday or Tuesday after Easter Sunday. Based on experience, these are the days that the port has lesser passengers wanting to take the ferries back to Lucena.
