Fukuoka is located in the southern part of Japan. It is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture on the northern shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu - the third largest island in Japan. It is Kyushu's largest and one of Japan's ten most populated cities. As an important harbor city, many travelers visit Fukuoka to enjoy its many amazing and interesting tourist spots and attractions, gastronomic offerings, and its many shopping destinations. Fukuoka has a long history. It is a product of the fusion of two former towns: the castle town of Fukuoka and the merchant and port town of Hakata. The two towns were combined in 1889 which form the present day Fukuoka City. Despite that, Hakata remained as the name of one of Fukuoka City’s central districts and its main railway station.

JAPAN VISA REQUIREMENTS
If you're a Filipino holding a Philippine passport, you need to have a Japan tourist visa to enter Japan. Single entry tourist visa holders could stay for up to 15 days and multiple-entry visa holders could stay up to 30 days in Japan.
If you don't have a Japan Tourist Visa yet, you can apply for the visa in the Philippines.
Getting a Japan Tourist Visa is quick, easy and convenient. Just be sure to submit the complete requirements along with your visa application form. Submit it to an accredited travel agency and wait for at least 5 days to a week for the result of your application to be released. Single entry visa is valid for 3 months from the day the visa was granted. If you have a multiple entry Japan visa, it is valid for 5-10 years, depending on what was granted to you. I recommend that you submit your visa application 2 or 2.5 months before your intended date of trip to Japan.
To guide you in your visa application, you may refer to this step-by-step guide on how to apply for a Japan Tourist Visa with list of requirements.
To avoid any inconvenience in passing through immigration, be sure to have your return/onward tickets, proof of hotel reservation/s, and activity/tour bookings in case the immigration officer asks for it. Also, always check you flight details and make sure that your departure date is within the maximum number of days allowed for you to stay in Japan.

HOW TO GET TO FUKUOKA CITY CENTER FROM FUKUOKA AIRPORT?
What I love about Fukuoka is that the airport is located within the city. Getting to the city center is so easy and convenient.
BY SUBWAY: Upon exiting the international airport terminal, go to bus stop 1 and take the free airport shuttle bus to the domestic terminal. Upon reaching the last stop, you will find the stairs going down that leads to the subway station. From here, the city center is just 5 minutes away by subway via Fukuoka Subway's Kuko Line. If your hotel is near Hakata Station, it's just 2 stops away and fare is around 260 JPY. If your hotel is in Tenjin, it is 5 stops away and fare is also around 260 JPY. If your hotel is in Nakasu-kawabata (where one of our hotel is), it is 4 stations away and fare is also 260 JPY.
BY PRIVATE CAR TRANSFER:. If you have huge luggage or bags with you, I recommend getting a Private Fukuoka Airport Transfer for easy and convenient travel from the airport to your hotel at the city center. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and ideal for groups and families especially when traveling with kids and senior citizens.
HOW TO GET AROUND FUKUOKA CITY?
SUBWAY TRAINS
Just like other major cities in Japan, Fukuoka City is well-connected and most of the tourist spots are near a train station. In going around the city, we fully maximized the use of the city subway as well as the JR Lines. To save on travel expenses, you may also get a Fukuoka Subway 1 or 2-day Unlimited Pass. This subway pass will give you unlimited rides on the wide subway network of Fukuoka for as low as ₱ 298 pesos for a 1-day pass and for ₱ 344 pesos for a 2-day pass. This will definitely save you a lot on travel expenses especially if you'll be taking the subway most of the time. The Fukuoka subway's operating hours is from 06:00 am to 11:00 pm, daily.
PRIVATE CAR CHARTER
If you're traveling in group, with children or senior citizens, the most convenient way to explore Fukuoka is to rent a private car. Travel safely and comfortably as you get around Fukuoka and surrounding areas with a professional yet friendly driver. The rental is inclusive of fuel fees, toll fees, parking fees, hotel pick up and drop off service, and service fee for the driver or guide.
USEFUL FUKUOKA PASSES
Aside from the Fukuoka Unlimited Subway Pass which you can use to travel around Fukuoka City, if you're planning to visit multiple cities or prefectures during your trip to Fukuoka, you may also consider getting the following passes. These will be very useful and will certainly save you a lot on travel expenses.
JAPAN RAIL PASS (JR Pass)
Traveling from one city/prefecture to another? I recommend using a JR Pass!
Rail transport is the major transportation in Japan. Their trains are undeniably great and advanced in technology. The best example of it are their bullet trains also known as Shinkansen trains. The bullet trains offer passengers fast and unforgettable experience with speeds reaching up to 320 km/hr. Taking the bullet train is so expensive. But if you have a JR Pass, you can have unlimited train ride on the JR Lines, which also includes the Shinkansen. The JR Pass is very useful and an economical way to travel around Japan. So, don't miss to get a JR PASS, especially if you're traveling from multiple cities or prefecture across Japan.
How can you maximize your JR Pass?
It will definitely depend on your itinerary. For example, if you wish to visit Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Saga and Hiroshima and you have 7 full days to explore, I recommend that you get a 7-day Whole Japan JR Pass. You’ll be able to maximize the cost of the JR Pass because the Shinkansen alone from Fukuoka to Hiroshima, then to Nagasaki and to Saga, and back to Fukuoka, you already fully maximized it. With that itinerary, you’ve actually have spent more than the cost of the JR Pass. More to that, you can also use your JR Pass in local JR trains, in JR buses, in Miyajima Ferry, as well as on Hiroshima Hop-on Hop-off bus. Aside from saving on transportation expenses, you can also save a lot on time because you can ride the shinkansen trains.
JR Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass
If you're planning to explore different prefectures such as Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, you may avail the JR Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass. This pass will give you unlimited rides on the Sanyo Shinkansen, Express Trains, Rapid Services, local trains, and even the JR West ferry to Miyajima.
JR Kyushu Rail Pass
If you want to visit other cities and prefectures within the Kyushu Island, you may get the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. This pass will give you unlimited travel on JR trains on the island of Kyushu (except the Sanyo Shinkansen). It is available in three types, such as North, South and All Kyushu Pass. Depending on your itinerary, be sure to purchase the rail pass you need.
Nagasaki Shinkansen Train Pass
If you plan to visit Nagasaki from Fukuoka, you may get a Nagasaki Shinkansen 1 Day Train Pass. This pass will let you enjoy efficient and speedy round trip train ride on the Shinkansen between Hakata and Nagasaki, as well as unlimited rides on the Nagasaki Electric Tramways.
WHERE TO STAY? HOTELS AND HOSTELS IN FUKUOKA CITY
When searching for hotels in Fukuoka, I recommend staying in Hakata, Nakasu, or Tenjin areas. These areas are very accessible because each of them has a subway station. HOW TO STAY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET IN JAPAN?
Whenever I travel abroad, I always make sure that I stay connected to the internet. I use the internet to search for destinations, Google maps for directions, to update my social media accounts, and to communicate with my family and friends back home. When traveling to Japan, you may rent a portable travel wifi or buy a sim card. For families and small groups, renting a wifi device is ideal since you could share the connection, as well as the cost. For solo travelers, I recommend buying a sim card.
JAPAN 4G POCKET WIFI
- Enjoy unlimited data use with a 4G WiFi that conveniently fits in your pocket for as low as ₱361 pesos per day per device. You can share the connection and can connect up to 5 devices per pocket WIFI. Pick-up location is at Fukuoka International Airport.
JAPAN DATA SIM CARD
- Buying a Japan Data sim card is a cheaper alternative if you're traveling alone. You can buy a Japan sim card even before you leave the Philippines. You may contact @travelsimph on Instagram. All you need to do is order your desired sim card, pay the amount, and they will ship to you the sim card. You just have to insert the sim card and turn on roaming services to activate it upon arrival in Japan. As easy and quick as that!
WHERE TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY?
Japan currency is called Japanese Yen (JPY) which is about 0.0090 US Dollar (USD) or 0.47 Philippine Peso (PHP) during our trip. You can bring in USD or EUROS to Japan and have it changed to Japanese Yen upon arriving at the arrival area of Fukuoka International Airport. You can also find money exchange centers at the city center such as Hakata and Tenjin areas. You can also go to some big hotels that offer money exchange services to change your money to Japanese Yen.
Alternatively, before leaving Manila, you can also change money at the many money changers found at NAIA Terminals. If you run our of cash, another option is to withdraw from international ATMs in Fukuoka. But take note that the exchange rate when withdrawing at the ATM is slightly higher. During our trip it's at 1.00 JPY for 0.49 PHP when I withdrew money from the ATMs. Also, every transaction has a service fee of around 150 to 180 pesos depending on the bank you used.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT FUKUOKA?
I've been to Fukuoka twice, and that is during autumn season. If you want to experience autumn in Fukuoka, you should visit the city at around late September to November.
If you want to experience spring to see cherry blossoms and flower gardens in Fukuoka, you should visit it during late March to May. For summer season, visit Fukuoka in June to August and for winter, you should visit it in December to early March.
When planning your trip, always check the weather before your scheduled flight. I use available weather apps on my smartphone to check the weather forecast and the expected temperature during our trip. Some apps could give you up to 7 days forecast. This will definitely help you a lot in deciding what clothes to bring for your trip.
HOW MANY DAYS TO SPEND IN FUKUOKA?
I believe the most ideal is 4 days and 3 nights to enjoy most of the tourist spots, attractions and things to do in Fukuoka and have some extra time for shopping. If you want to visit other cities such as Nagasaki and Hiroshima, I suggest that you make your trip at least 7 days. But if you have limited time and budget, a 3 days and 3 nights itinerary is also quite good and feasible. Check out my Sample 3D3N Fukuoka Itinerary below.

FUKUOKA CASTLE RUINS (Maizuru Park)
Nestled at the center of the city in Maizuru Park, Fukuoka Castle Ruins (also known as Maizuru Castle or Seki Castle) is a huge complex of what remained from the old castle of Fukuoka. Built in the beginning of the 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, it used to be the biggest castle on Kyushu Island during the Edo period from 1603 to 1867. Now, only the ruined walls, some gates, guard towers, and a few turrets where left and scattered across the castle grounds.
The best time to visit Fukuoka Castle is during spring time when thousands of its cherry trees blooms. The complex is filled with walking paths lined with tall trees where visitors could enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It’s a great quiet place to relax, unwind, and have some rest during your tour.
We visited it during autumn and we also enjoyed the lovely trees with orange and red leaves. It’s truly a memorable experience for me.
There’s also a viewing deck in what was known as the main tower of the castle. Here, you could enjoy a stunning view of the city, Odori Park and the many trees surrounding the castle.

YATAI STALLS
Fukuoka is known for Hakata Ramen. One of the best places to have a taste of it is to try it at Fukuoka’s Yatai Stalls. These small food carts can be seen in many areas in Fukuoka City, such as Tenjin and Hakata. These open-air food stalls pop-up around Fukuoka after sunset. They are only open at night, around 6:00 pm to 02:00 am which makes them a great place to enjoy late dinner or after-drinks snacks.

Persimmons are nutritious fruits that contain plenty of vitamin C, vitamin B and potassium. This is the first time I tasted a persimmon. It’s like apple, papaya and melon combined. It’s quite good!
Visit Yutoku Inari Shrine in Kashima City in Saga Prefecture
Built in 1687, Yotoku Inari Shrine is located in Kashima City in Saga Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, it was built on a unique place on the steep hill of a valley. It one of the three largest and most famous shrines dedicated to Inari. The other two are the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto and the Toyokawa Inari Shrine in Aichi Prefecture.
The main shrine was built on the hillside with tall wooden stilts which reminded of me the famous Kiyomizudera temple in Kyoto. The red vermilion Torii gates near the main shrine which straddle a network of trails lead to Okunoin (inner shrine) where you could see a spectacular view of the city.
