Ever wondered how it is to be on top of the tallest tower in the world? Let’s go to Tokyo Skytree!
The Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower located in Sumida Ward in Tokyo, Japan. It is considered as the "tallest tower in the world" with a height of 634.0 meters (2,080 ft) above the ground. The Tokyo Skytree was completed on February 29, 2012, with the tower opening to the public on May 22, 2012. Rising high above the city, it was built using the same principles as the Japanese pagoda. The Tokyo Skytree is also considered as the second tallest structure in the world after Dubai's Burj Khalifa.
Visible from many parts of the city, the Tokyo Skytree dominates and stands out in Tokyo's skyline and has quickly become one of Tokyo's most popular tourist destinations. It has 2 observation decks. One at a height of 350 meters and another one is at 450 meters high. That’s the reason why we wanted to include it in our Tokyo Itinerary. We want to experience what is like be on top of the city and to see the amazing views of Tokyo from above.
Visitors can climb up the Tokyo Skytree Tembo Deck at 350 meters above the ground that features an unmatched wide-open 360º view of the city. In good weather you can even spot Mount Fuji looming on the horizon. The observation decks are enclosed with glass windows and can therefore be enjoyed in any weather conditions. Unfortunately, it’s raining and very cloudy during our visit, so were not able to see the majestic Fuji-san.
You can also go up to the Tembo Galleria at 450 meters above the ground which will let you experience “walking in the sky” as you walk through the sloping spiral ramp that gains height as it circles the tower. It is by far the highest accessible point of the Tokyo Skytree that is open to the public.
The observation decks are also home to a number of dining and shopping options where you could buy some Tokyo Skytree souvenirs or have a meal while enjoying the amazing views.
The Tokyo Skytree area is much more than just the tower. The area around the tower is a mecca of shopping and dining destinations. After experiencing the observation decks, you may go down to Tokyo Solamachi which is home to hundreds of restaurants, shops, museums and a lot more! You can even visit Studio Ghibli Shop, Pokemon Center, Hello Kitty and Ultraman stores for limited-edition items you could bring back home. Aside from that, you may also visit the planetarium as well as the Sumida Aquarium.
If you don’t want to go up the tower’s observation deck, you can also enjoy Tokyo Skytree as it lights up in different colors every night. You can head to nearby Asakusa, which is just across the Sumida River where you could enjoy and appreciate the tower’s beauty from a far.
