The image of the Black Nazarene or Hesus Nazareno is one of the most revered in the Philippines. It is the image of a miraculous dark-skinned and kneeling Jesus Christ bearing the Cross, and is enshrined at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo District in the City of Manila.

Every January 9, the roads of the City of Manila are filled with devotees and pilgrims to celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Also known as "Pista ng Itim na Nazareno ng Quiapo", it is considered as one of the most-attended and highly-anticipated religious gatherings in the Catholic Church. As the Philippines being the biggest Catholic nation in Asia, millions of devotees and pilgrims join the procession of the Black Nazarene every year. This huge event commemorates the "Traslacion" or the transfer of the miraculous image of the Black Nazarene from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church in Manila. Certainly, the Feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the most-attended fiestas in Metro Manila and in the Philippines.

QUIAPO FIESTA 2020: Feast of the Black Nazarene Traslacion Procession Route, Schedule of Activities, Safety Tips, Reminders, and More!

Feast of the Black Nazarene 2020 Procession Route (Traslacion 2020)

The procession route this 2020 was changed a bit, but it will still be going to the traditional route.

The image of the Black Nazarene is borne in a carriage pulled by the devotees in a procession (Traslacion) which commences from Quirino Grandstand (Luneta), passes through the streets of Manila and finally ends in Quiapo Church. The whole procession usually lasts for about 10-12 hours.

From Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, the Black Nazarene will turn left to Katigbak Road thru P. Burgos Street, then to Finance Road thru Ayala Boulevard, then Palanca Street. It will then turn right to Quezon Boulevard and turn right to Arlegui Street.

The procession of the Black Nazarene will then turn right to Fraternal St. turn right to Vergara St., then left to Duque de Alba St.

Then left to Castillejos St., left to Farnecio St., then it will turn right to Arlegui St. Next, it will turn left to Nepomuceno St., turn left to Conception Aguila St and turn right to Carcer street.

It well then go to Hidalgo through Plaza Del Carmen and turn left to Bilibid Viejo through Gil Puyat. The Black Nazarene will then turn left to J.P. De Guzman St., turn right to Hidalgo St., and then to Quezon Blvd. The image will then turn right to Palanca Street thru under Quezon Bridge and turn right to Villalobos through Plaza Miranda to get to Quiapo Church.

Important Safety Tips and Reminders

I experienced an overwhelming multitude of devotees and pilgrims joining the annual traslacion of the Black Nazarene when I witnessed the Feast of the Black Nazarene Procession in 2013. With this, let me share some of safety tips and reminders that could help you plan if you wish to attend the Feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9, 2020.

  • Be sure to check and study the procession route. If you've already chosen the place where to witness it, be early at the procession route to get a good spot.
  • Always bring an Identification Card with contact information of any of your family members in case of emergency.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and footwear (preferably shoes). Do not wear jewelries, or bring expensive electronic devices or any valuables. Just bring what you need.
  • Bring something to eat (crackers, sandwich, biscuits) and bottled water. Although there are food stalls along the procession route, you just have to make sure that your food is clean. Drink a lot of fluid to prevent dehydration.
  • With too many people around, it is best not to bring your wallet. Just bring enough cash and secure it in your pocket.
  • If you're coming in groups, assign a designated meeting place and time in case someone gets lost. Cellphone signal along the procession is sometimes turned off by the telecoms for security purposes.
  • Maintain appropriate distance from other people to avoid unnecessary injuries in case of stampede. Always plan a safe exit path from the huge crowd.
  • Make sure that you are physically prepared. Always be alert and patient.
