During the multiple lockdowns at the start of the pandemic, streaming movies on Netflix and watching videos on YouTube have been part of my day-to-day routine. Usually, I would spend the whole day just browsing on travel and house improvement videos on YouTube or finish a series on Netflix in a day or two. Since I don’t have a television inside my room, my mobile phone and laptop are my "best buddies" when binging on my favorite series and streaming movies online.

Having a home cinema is one of my dreams. But I know that if I want to have a great home theater experience, I definitely must invest on a nice projector. I’m actually been planning to buy a projector, but it’s too expensive so I have to really save for it. Good thing I learned that there are affordable projectors in the market today, like the LUMOS RAY Projectors.

LUMOS is a Singapore-based brand that brought the LUMOS RAY Projectors here in the Philippines. They recently launched in the Philippines and let me experience their product. LUMOS sent me their LUMOS RAY Smart Projector to try it out!

1. It’s Compact and Lightweight

The LUMOS RAY Smart Projector has a modern and slick design. Weighing 1.2 kilograms and with a dimension of 16 x 17 x 15 cm, it could fit inside your luggage or backpack and bring it on sleepovers or staycations with your family and friends. Its lightweight and portable design make it very handy and can be mounted on a tripod with a 1/4 inch screw hole - which is compatible with standard tripod/camera stands. And because it’s portable, you can use it wherever you want, as long as there’s a wall socket where you could plug-in the device.

2. Built-in Apps

The LUMOS RAY Smart Projector has built-in apps like Netflix, Youtube and Kodi, so you can play movies straight from the device. It also comes with a Google PlayStore app where you can download other apps that you may want to use. These built-in app makes the LUMOS RAY SMART Projector a plug and play device. Simply turn it on and you’ll have an amazing home entertainment in one small device. How cool is that?!

3. Allows Screencasting

The LUMOS RAY Smart Projector’s built-in aircasting apps let you connect your smartphone and watch movies directly from your phone. Simply connect the LUMOS RAY Projector and your phone to the same WiFi network and use the built-in screen mirroring app to connect. It works both on iPhones and Android phones because it is pre-installed with Airplay/AirScreen app for iPhones & Samsung Phones, as well as Miracast for other android phones. I like using this feature when watching videos I recorded during my travels or when checking on photos saved on my phone. You may also use this when watching live videos on Facebook, Tiktok and other social media apps installed on your phone.

4. Amazing Video Resolution

The LUMOS RAY Projector comes with a 720p native resolution (supports 1080p resolution) and projection of up to 150 inches in size with just 4.5 meter projection distance. With its 3000 Lumens brightness and 3000:1 contrast ratio, it delivers crisp, vibrant and rich colors.

Watching movies inside a dark room and using a clean white wall or a projector screen is highly recommended to fully enjoy your home theater experience. I love that it also has horizontal and vertical keystone correction feature which allows manual adjustment of the projection screen. With this, you can still enjoy proper screen projection even if you place the LUMOS RAY at one side of your room.

With a short throw ratio of 1.35:1, it can also also be used even in small rooms, making it an ideal projector for people with small living spaces and those who live in condo units with small bedrooms.

5. It’s also a Bluetooth Speaker

Another thing I like most is that you can also use the LUMOS RAY as a Bluetooth Speaker. You can connect your device to the LUMOS RAY via bluetooth and enjoy music with its 2 built-in Dolby Audio Speakers. The LUMOS RAY’s built-in speakers produce decent audio which you could also enjoy when watching movies or binging on your favorite Netflix series. Since it has built-in speakers, you don’t need to connect external speakers to fully enjoy your home theater. But if you want to connect external speakers or headset, it also has the option for that. Amazing!

6. Compatible with many devices

With an array of cables included in the package, you can use it to connect to other devices such as PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, XBOX, Chromecast, Apple TV and many more. You could enjoy playing your favorite video games, sing your heart out on your videoke player, and so much more!

The LUMOS RAY comes in two versions. The LUMOS RAY Regular is priced at ₱8,999 and the LUMOS RAY Smart at ₱11,999. They implement a direct-to-consumer business model which keeps their prices low. It is definitely an affordable and “value-for-money” projector considering its premium features and capabilities.
